Nadia Funnies Friday, Nov 30 2007

Motherhood is so full of special little moments. Of course there are the big milestone, but it’s the little details that are most precious to me….those tiny unexpected moments of sweetness or humor that fill a mother’s heart to overflowing. At least a dozen times a day there’s some special little something that makes me smile, and I resolve to remember it forever. In that moment, I feel that I will remember it forever – after all, how could I ever forget when my baby did ___________?! But of course, I don’t remember. That which seems like the funniest, sweetest and cutest thing in the world today will fade, and by next week that memory will have been replaced by some new funniest, sweetest and cutest moment.

And so, I try to jot down these little stories so they can live forever on paper (or on the computer screen???) if not in my memory. I have had quite a mental list of cute Nadia stories, but now that I’m actually sitting down to write it seems that I can only recall a couple. I took too long, and now a few more precious Nadia memories are gone forever.

But I do have a couple to share!

——-
Amongst all the great birthday gifts Nadia received last week was a pair of blue jeans – just plain ol’ dark denim pants. I was glad to get them, as it seems so many little girl jeans these days are covered in embellishments and I wanted just a basic pair that works with anything. So a few days ago I pulled out those jeans for Nadia to wear for the first time.

“We’ll have to make sure you wear a pink shirt with these jeans” I commented. “They could almost be for a little boy!” (As an aside, does anyone think Nadia looks at ALL like a boy? Because as recently as a few weeks ago, I got a “what a cute little boy” comment. Huh?!)

Well, Nadia heard the word “boy” in connection to her jeans, and all of a sudden she didn’t want to wear them. “Those BOY!” she said. “Nana GIRL!”

Well, I’ll be darned! I didn’t realize she even understood the distinction between boys and girls, let alone not want anything associated with boys! I mean, she barely even TWO! Half the time she still misidentifies boys as girls and vice versa. But she didn’t want those “boys” pants. (I did get her to wear them…but it took some explaining that they really are girls pants and yes, Nadia is a girl even if she wears them!)

Fast forward to today. It was another jeans day, this time the pair that IS embellishmented with girly purple flowers. But all Nadia saw was the denim fabric. “No wear, boy clothes!” she said, and threw them to the floor. So evidently anything denim is on her boycott list. (I actually did get her to wear those ones too…but again, it took some convincing).

Crazy little GIRL!

——
Any mother can tell you that a lot of things change with a kid in the house. Most of those changes have worked themselves into the fabric of our lives such that I don’t even notice them anymore….it’s simply the way things are. But there’s one thing I don’t think I’ll ever get used to, and that’s having a bathroom cheerleader. It just seems crazy to have a little person beside me as I sit on the toilet, cheering me on. “Yay, Mommy go potty!” she exclaims, her face alight with this great excitement! “Good job Mommy!” She sometimes even offers “high five, Mama!” It makes me laugh every time.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Thursday, Nov 29 2007

Whoa! Do you folks realize it’s less than a month until Christmas?!

Yeah, probably everyone else is fully aware of that…but it just hit me full force yesterday. I knew Christmas was creeping ever closer, but I’ve been so focused on Nadia’s birthday and Thanksgiving that I kinda lost track of the next big holiday right around the corner!

But now the Christmas season is in full swing. It’s time for hot chocolate and Christmas carols and fires (yes, even in Texas!) and lots of family fun! At every store I enter, I am greeted by the familiar Christmas carols I love so much. Parted curtains reveal the warm glow of Christmas trees, and a few houses already have lights up outside already. The December page of my calendar is filling up fast with festive events (I just found out our mall will have LIVE REINDEER!). I love it!

We pulled out the Christmas decorations on Sunday, and the twinkling lights make the place look festive. This is the Year of the Small Tree; I know my girl well enough to know that the full size tree would equal nothing but frustration for both of us, so we opted for a 3′ tree on top of the entertainment center, surrounded by my Precious Moments Christmas village.

Not surprisingly, Nadia loves it. She would be happy for us to stand there all day long, inspecting each ornament and building of the village. Equally unsurprising: the fire station is her favorite!

Fishy Friends Wednesday, Nov 28 2007

Our little household doubled in size last week – from 4 to 8.

But the newest members are pretty tiny…barely even an inch long each.

watery world

There are fours little fishies in there, hiding amongst the flora and fauna of their watery world.

Nadia loves the huge saltwater tank at Baba and Pappy’s house (and I do too!), so when they offered to set up a 20 gallon freshwater tank for her birthday I knew she’d love it. Pappy came over last week to establish the tank and teach me how to care for it.

We had to let it settle for a couple days before adding any fish, but that didn’t bother Nadia any. In fact, I don’t think she even noticed their absence! That first day, she woke up from her nap while Pappy was still arranging the tank; as soon as it was filled with water, she began talking to the non-existent fish. Every time we left the house she said bye-bye to the fish, and every time we came home she immediately ran over to check on them. And she thanked Baba and Pappy for her fish tank. A lot. I lost track of how many time she said “Mama?” and I said “yes, dear” and she said “thank you fish, Pappy. Thank you fish, Baba.”

But even if she was happy with just an empty tank, we need to fill it with fish. So a couple days later we made a trip to the pet store. There we discovered child-size shopping carts – Nadia was in heaven!

the little shopper

We came home with 2 black neon tetras and 2 cherry barbs. Both Nadia and I are first-time fish owners, but so far I’ve managed to keep them alive and swimming so we’re doing good! It’s actually pretty cool to watch them become more sociable, swimming to the top when we feed them and chasing each other around the tank.

new fish

Nadia loves her fishies. Every morning she races to peer in on them, and she asks me “turn on light, Mama. Feed fishies, Mama.” Probably a dozen times throughout the day she runs over to check on them and have a little chat. And each evening she bids them goodnight as we turn off the light. while I do have to remind her not to bang on the glass, she will sit and quietly watch them for 15-20 minutes at a time.

So I’d say the fish tank is a hit. I look forward to growing our little collection of fish over the years and in time teaching Nadia how to care for them. And I second Nadia’s sentiment – “Thank you fish, Pappy. Thank you fish, Baba.”

BSM – Almost two on a beautiful fall day Monday, Nov 26 2007

It was the day before Thanksgiving and Nadia and I took a break between making sweet potato casserole and shopping for fishies (more on that to come, probably tomorrow!). Yesterday had been shorts-&-tshirt-weather but today it was invigratingly cool and crisp. We were delightfully chilly even with lightweight jackets. Nadia scampered down the street in her carefree child way, and I followed, camera at the ready. I had to capture some pictures of my little girl on her last day as a one year old! We waved at passing cars, examined acorns and twigs, spotted airplanes, barked back at dogs….(and ran away from Mommy – but we won’t talk about that). Her faithful companion TedBear came along for the adventure.

She fell at one point and scraped her knee, but no harm was done – a Mommy Kiss healed it as good as new. But the incident was not forgotten…she recreated it over and over with TedBear as the unwitting victim. Again and again, she had that bear fall and cry. Again and again she rushed to his side and cradled him in her arms. “Where boo-boo?” she cooed, and then she kissed his knee. A few moments later the scene replayed itself. If only all children were as blessed with caring mothers as TedBear!

The Kitty Cat Party Monday, Nov 26 2007

So, the kitty birthday was a success. Loud and chaotic, but that goes with the territory with kids!

The fun started before Nadia’s guests even arrived. I told her first thing in the morning that all her cousins and grandparents and aunts and uncles were coming to her house for a birthday party. She didn’t really understand the “birthday party” part, but she sure was excited about the ides of having all the people she loved in one place! All morning long, she kept asking me “come pretty soon, Mama?”

So when the doorbell rang, she was beside herself with joy. She welcomed each of her 6 cousins with a Kitty Cup of goodies – and it didn’t take them long to figure out the straws can double as whistles.

Decorating the kitty cookies was a hit. As expected, most of Nadia’s frosting and sprinkles went directly into her mouth…but some did make it onto the cookie! The older girls took the decorating quite serious – even if their outfits looked less-than-serious!

I am not the best artist, so I made Daddy promise to draw the kitty for Pin the Tail. It kept getting delayed, but Saturday morning I was delighted to wake up and find a very adorable kitty laying on the kitchen table! Great job Daddy! The kitty poster is now proudly displayed in Nadia’s room. The game itself wasn’t such a success, though. The oldest niece was excited about it and asked to play, but the other girls had no interest in it whatsoever. Oh well!

I am glad to say the kitty cake was much enjoyed. All the kids wanted whiskers on their piece! After we lit the “#2″ candle and sang to Nadia, I instructed her to blow the candle out…so she leaned over as I stood 2 feet away with the camera. Next thing I knew, Oma was grabbing her out of the way and extinguishing the flame, and I smelled the unmistakable scent of singed hair. I’d been so busy with that darn camera that I hadn’t even realized my baby was on fire! Her right eyelashes are singed. I felt awful…and hardly touched the camera again the rest of the party. So that’s why there aren’t many pictures!

On to presents. We had talked about opening presents all week, so I thought she might really “get it” this time. Nope! The first gift went over great…so great that she and the other girls ran off to play with it, forgetting the other brightly-wrapped packages! A few times I dragged her back to open another present, but the last few I just opened myself while she played.

Amazingly, despite her apparent disinterest in the unwrapping-process, Nadia knows who gave her each item. Every time she picks up a new toy, she says “thank you, ______” and names the correct person. And my goodness, what a haul she got!! I don’t think the kid needs anything for Christmas now! Lots of her old toys will be finding new homes through Freecycle, to make room for all the fun new things.

She has been enjoying all her new toys and books and clothes, but there are two favorites:

1) The giant Tonka dump truck from Uncle Tim. It was rather amusing to see her and all her (girl!) cousins clustered around a truck! I think I heard every single man there wish he’d had a truck like that as a kid. With its yellow-and-red flame paint job and rocks to load and unload, it is pretty cool! I’m just surprised Nadia hasn’t tried to sit in it herself yet…

2) The shopping cart – that I chose! Yay, it always makes me feel good when my gift is a hit. :o ) Nadia has been loading it down with all sorts of things. I think she’s trying to see if she can get everything and the kitchen sink to fit in there. It’s hilarious to watch her role-play with TedBear. First she puts him in the back of the cart and begins her trek around the house. And then she admonishes, “no TedBear, sit down! on bottom!” Apparently her bear doesn’t listen very well, so this is followed by “be safe! sit in front” and she pulls him out to sit in the front seat. “That better” she reports, and off she goes to finish her shopping.

So, that was the kitty cat party. I really was pleased with how well it went. The kids all seemed to have a great time, and there were just beginning to show signs of nap-readiness as the party wound down. I wonder what type of party will mark her third birthday?!

The Bare Minimum Sunday, Nov 25 2007

I’ve made it almost through to the end of NaBloPoMo without a problem. But today…I’ve got nothing. Well, that’s not quite true; I’ve got the kitty cat party to tell you about! It was quite the success, but I’m tired and I don’t feel like writing. So you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow. There, now I’ve fulfilled my crazy “Blog like a crazy person” duty to post every single freakin’ day, and I can go to bed. And dream of a tomorrow with absolutely nothing I have to do. Wheeee! Maybe we’ll put up the Christmas tree. Or maybe we’ll go shopping – there are some sales I’d like to check out. Or maybe we’ll laze about in pajamas all day. Yeah, I think the third idea will win. I’m even going to skip church. Texas is experiencing a rare cold snap and the church heater is out right now..and I’m just not feeling up to bundling me and the girl up. Plus, after Thanksgiving and Birthday, I just need a day OFF! And now I’m rambling, so good night!

Dishwashers and Kitty cakes Saturday, Nov 24 2007

Looks like I’ve solved my dishwashing problem:

112307_05

My dishwashing machine went out a couple weeks ago (it’s not draining right) and we haven’t been able to get it fixed yet. So I’ve been doing the dishes myself the old fashioned way. That sure does make a person appreciate modern conveniences!

But tonight I found a better solution: child labor!

112307_08
Although I’m not sure it can be called that if she’s this happy about it?
112307_07
But why must she put everything in her mouth?! That’s a dirty sponge. EWWWW!
112307_10
At any rate, it means I don’t have to do the dishes.

Oh wait, that’s not true. It means I get to do the dishes myself AFTER cleaning up from her messy attempt to do them! But who could resist Cinderella like that?! (Carrie, I think she may give your Cinderella a run for her money…she wants to wear this dress all the time now, and insists on being addressed as “Cinderella!” All of a sudden overnight, she’s a girly-girl!)

Ever since the first time we baked together a few days ago, Nadia wants to be my constant kitchen helper. No matter what I’m doing, she is right there to lend a helping hand. We have cooked together more in these last few days than in the rest of her entire life! Today she helped me make her birthday cake, and then she helped with dinner, and she also helped make cookies for the party. Whew! I felt like I was cleaning the kitchen all day long. Good thing I had Cinderella to help with washing the dishes!

Speaking of cakes and baking…I have decided to name Nadia as the official family baker. With all the practice she’s getting lately, it won’t be long before she overtakes me in terms of baking ability. She and I made the cake together this morning and it came out great. Then she want down for her nap and I decorated it….and the results were not quite what I had envisioned!

I have a friend with amazing cake-making talent, so I asked her advice on what frosting would work best for the fluffy little kitty cake. She recommended a simple Cool Whip, cream cheese and powdered sugar recipe that would create wonderfully fluffy fur. And so I confidently began combining those ingredients. But I could not get the right texture….I mixed and I mixed and I mixed, adding a little more of this and a little more of that. The stuff was slick and shiny, and it ran right off the knife. But it tasted divine! I am not a frosting person – it’s usually too sweet for me – and I could happily eat a full bowl of that stuff. But it simply wasn’t going to work for the cake. So I snuck a couple more tastes before abandoned it for Plan B. Betty Crocker and her Coconut Pecan icing the to rescue! And so, we do not have a fluffy white cat…we have a furry brown cat instead. It is pretty cute, even if it’s not what I’d planned. And I doubt Nadia will care.

112307_01
I will try to get a better picture of it tomorrow; this looked fine on the LCD screen but then I downloaded and it was blurry. Ugh. And I’m not about to go take pictures again at 11:14 at night. Nope, I’m going to bed! So goodnight!

Turkey Day 2007 Friday, Nov 23 2007

Happy Day after thanksgiving, everyone! I hope your hearts are all filled today with wonderful memories of yesterday’s holiday. And I hope you all know how truly thankful I am for the fantastic friends I’ve met through blogging!

Vasily’s Dad and sister-in-law and her two girls joined us yesterday for Thanksgiving, and we had a wonderful time. Our first full Thanksgiving meal was a tasty success – Hubby was in charge of the turkey and I did the rest (gravy, cornbread stuffing, cranberries, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, summer sausage and cheese) And Laura brought pumpkin and pecan pies for desert. We ate in the living room with the fire warming our backs- not exactly the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but there wasn’t room enough around the table and it tasted just as good from the couch!

Based on the gales of laughter, the three girls had a great time chasing each other around the house and playing dress-up. And begging to go outside in the snow.

Yes, it SNOWED! In Texas! It was amazing to look outside and see big, fat fluffy white flakes spiraling downwards.

Yesterday was also Nadia’s birthday! As she is happy to tell anyone that asks, my little girl is officially two. The party’s tomorrow, but we couldn’t let her real birthday pass without at least one present. So all day she proudly wore her Cinderella slippers and Cinderella sweat shirt, carried around her Cinderella cup and ate off her Cinderella placemat.

Today we’ve been hanging out, watching movies, and tackling the mountain of dishes – sans dishwasher. I’m off to decorate Nadia’s kitty cake now…wish me luck!

Happy Birthday to my baby! Thursday, Nov 22 2007

I have much for which to be thankful….and my TWO year old Nadia tops the list!
She has grown so much this year…I hope you enjoy sharing in our memories.
(Nadia enjoys it – we just watched the montage three times back to back, and she’s still saying “more watch baby Nana!”)

Happy Birthday, Princess!
