Are you sick of pumpkins yet? Wednesday, Oct 31 2007

the first cut (is the deepest!)

We carved pumpkins last night – nothing like waiting until the last minute!

This is our second time for this annual family event, so as we marched outside carrying pumpkins and bowl and knives, I had memories of last year floating through my mind. Memories of a cute little almost-one year old who was perfectly content to sit in her rocking chair and gnaw on a pumpkin cap while Daddy and Mommy got to work on the pumpkins.

This year, with a cute little almost-2 year old, didn’t go down quite the same way. Miss Nadia didn’t find this project too interesting, so she spent most of her time running around the backyard.

But she did stop by our work station to let us know in no uncertain that the pumpkin guts are “ewwww!” When I reached in to grab a handful of the gunk, she told us “no Mommy, Daddy do it. ewww!”with a totally disgusted face. At one point she gathered up her courage enough to give the bowl of seeds a quick stir – but then I reached toward hew with pumpkin-guts hands, and she ran off shrieking “ewwww!” Oh yes, she’s a brave one!

Speaking of pumpkin guts, ours had something I’d never before seen – sprouting seeds.

While Daddy carved one pumpkin, Nadia asked me to draw a kitty on the other one (I draw a lot of kitties these days. She wants them everywhere). She then added her own decorations on top.

So Nadia did get some enjoyment out of the pumpkins…but for the most part, she much prefers this type of pumpkin:

I think Nadia would do just about anything for one of those sweet little morsels. Hmmm, I wonder if I could get her to fold the laundry or mop the kitchen floor with the promise of a pumpkin candy?

Pumpkin Pictures Tuesday, Oct 30 2007

Alright, there are the pumpkin pictures!
Pumpkins, pumpkins, all in a row! I had such a cute shot in mind, with my lil pumpkin’s face filling the empty space between pumpkins…but she didn’t want to play along with that idea. What a Shocker!
Pumpkins, pumpkins, all in a row
Nadia found her pumpkin! She couldn’t even budge this big ol’ pumpkin, but she sure did try!
"I found a good one"
As soon as we got to the pumpkin patch, Nadia fell in love with the train. So we got in line, boarded the train…and she freaked out. Oh well! Do you see Daddy there, looking rather cramped on that tot-sized train? LOL!

Out of the entire pumpkin patch, this was Nadia’s favorite place: the jail. Crazy kid! She sure was a happy little jailbird.

But here’s the little escapee making her great escape.

She had a partner in crime. As soon as she started trying to climb out, this little boy rushed over to help her.

Oh wait, maybe the jail wasn’t her favorite thing after all…maybe it was the cotton candy! I just love Daddy’s expression here.

That’s one big ol’ bite of cotton candy! Sweet for my sweet.

That’s all, folks!

Mommy’s Girl Tuesday, Oct 30 2007

Dear Nadia,

I love you. I really and truly do.

And I’m glad you love me so much. I really and truly am.

But this obsessive need for Mommy’s undivided attention at all times? It’s getting old. It really and truly is.

We’ve survived these phases of Mommy-only-itis in the past. But kid, you’re almost two years old now. I never thought I’d be saying this, but it’s time for some independence. You really don’t need me to hold you all the time. You really don’t need me to do everything for you. Some self-sufficiency is a good thing (but not too much…you are still my baby after all). About two weeks ago you started being usually cuddly with me, and I enjoyed that. But then the cuddliness became clinginess and I’m no longer enjoying it as much.

I really can’t hold you while I’m cooking, no matter how much you whine and cry and pitch a fit. It’s for your own safety…and my own sanity.

And while I technically can hold you on my lap while I’m using the bathroom…it’d be nice to pee all by myself every once in a while.

I’m working on growing a third hand so I can hold you while doing everything else, but I haven’t been able to accomplish that yet. Until then, you’re just going to have to deal with a few minutes without me every once in a while.

But it’s not just that you want me to “hug you” (ie, hold you) constantly. You also want me to do everything for you…(while still holding you, of course). You want Mommy – and only Mommy -to get you a snack, Mommy to put your shoes on, Mommy to change your diaper. Sure, I’m flattered that you love me so much. But Sweetie, Mommy needs a break sometimes. And it hurts your Daddy when everything he does for you is met with you shrieking “no, Daddy! Mommy do it!” Last night we had a 10 minute meltdown because Daddy handed you a sippy cup instead of Mommy handing it to you. I mean come on, don’t you think that’s just a little ridiculous?!

Okay, so now that we’ve had this little talk I hope you’ll lighten up a bit. And yes, you have my permission to remind me about this letter in three months when you’re in a Daddy-only phase and I’m crying because you’ve broken my heart by “rejecting” me.

You know, on second thought….never mind. Soon enough you’ll be little Miss Independent and be pushing me away. Maybe I’ll just enjoy this time with you whining for me rather than you whining to get away from me. Yeah, I second thought – hey Nadia, want Mommy to hold you right now?

Love,
Your Mommy

Here’s my crazy girl, slurping up lemonade by the forkful.

How 'bout some lemonade?

And, the birthday boy. I wish I’d been able to catch him looking this way, but I still love the colors here.

Black, White & Shades of Gray Monday, Oct 29 2007

A few of you suggested a b&w conversion for today’s Best Shot. Great minds must think alike, as I had originally planned to do it in black & white! But then I just couldn’t get a conversion I liked. Here’s what I came up with…thoughts and suggestions are most welcome. What do you think? I could use some cropping suggestions, too.

Glow - B&W

BSM – Radiant Glow Monday, Oct 29 2007

I have about a gazillion photos to gro through from this weekend…but until then, here’s my best shot of the week.

Glow
Nadia was standing at the front door looking out, and the way the light illumined her was just gorgeous. Amazingly she stayed still while I grabbed the camera out of the next room and got this shot. Wow! That light is just awesome! I cloned out a tiny bit of the door on the opposite side, but for the most part it really was that luminous and white.

Skip on over to Tracey’s to see what everyone else has found beautiful this week!

Our Weekend Monday, Oct 29 2007

I am sad to say goodbye to this weekend. It has been a great couple days.

Saturday morning we had a garage sale. Or rather, I helped my sister-in-law have a garage sale here. She’d told me she had a ton of baby clothes to sell, but I didn’t fully appreciate what that meant until I saw the enormous mountain of tiny onesies and dresses. I began laying everything out in nice neat little rows organized by size, “awwwing” over each adorable little outfit and remembering my own girl in some of them…but I quickly realized the futility of that effort and resorted to just dumping the clothes in one huge pile. And when I say huge, I mean HUGE!! Here’s a rough idea of the quantity – we sold everything for 50c per item and we made over $200, and that was with cutting a lot of deals. And, that was only about half of it; finally at 2:00 we packed up the remainder and dropped it all off at GoodWilll. So, I really don’t think it would be exaggerating to say there were a thousand pieces of baby clothing lying in my driveway. Wow! And there were a lot of quality, name-brand clothes there, in near-perfect condition. I could see the joy in the eyes of the Mamas digging through those piles of clothes. “Jackpot!” those eyes said. I know I’d feel like I’d died and gone to heaven to find a similar sale with the next size up in clothes!

That afternoon we had a birthday party at The Little Gym. I must say, I love that place! Nadia loves it, too, but not so much because of the balance beams and bars….she’s just happy to be with the babies! It’s quite ironic to me that my little monkey climbs and jumps and rolls around everywhere else, and yet every time we’ve been to the gym she hangs back and loves on the babies, not really participating in the group activities. Funny kid! She also made me laugh by trying to drink her cup of lemonade with a fork. Yes, with a fork. She repeatedly dipped the fork in that sugary yellow goodness and reported that it was “mmm, good” with every single lick. She offered be a few forkfuls, too. I might have to try that again sometime, it kept her busy and in one spot for 15 minutes! I have pictures of it, too, but haven’t had the chance to go through them yet…so I’ll post those later. Oh, and we had a big girl moment – the first potty in the potty chair in a public restroom!

Today we went to the pumpkin patch. We let Nadia totally lead that show, and the first half hour was spent just running around in circles, pointing and saying “wow!” at all the cool stuff. Hay rides, train rides, bounce houses, hay bales jungle gymns, mazes, cutouts, horses…and it was all free, except for the pumpkins and the cotton candy! Wanna know what my kid’s favorite thing was? The jail. Crazy kid had the best time in there! She also loved the train…until we got on it. Then she freaked out and wanted off, so we just watched Daddy ride it instead. We came home with two round Nadia-sized pumpkins which we’ll be carving tomorrow. Again, I’ve got pictures but haven’t gone through them yet….I don’t think I got anything good, tho. I was really looking forward to some great pumpkin pictures, but I was pretty disappointed. There were plenty of great picture spots but between a kid that was constantly in motion and a husband that is always annoyed by my stopping to get a shot, I hardly got a single decent picture. Oh well.

While Nadia napped the afternoon away, hubby and I watched a movie. I’m too frugal/cheap to shell out $5 to rent a movie, but we discovered Redbox about a month ago and now I love being able to get a new release for $1 per night! So we watched “You, Me and Dupree.” It wasn’t the best movie of all time, but it was great for a couple hours of light entertainment. And the timing was perfect, as Nadia woke up 5 minutes after the movie ended and we spent the rest of the afternoon outside enjoying the beautiful crisp fall weather.

And now I’m going to go crawl into my cozy bed with my husband and my baby girl. As usual, Nadia really didn’t want to leave our bed for her crib tonight at bedtime, so I told her that as long as she is quiet and still she can stay there but if she wants to play she need to go to the crib. We tell her this almost every single night and almost every single night she ends up in her crib. But tonight she actually laid down, snuggled up, and went to sleep! I was shocked and delighted! Of course I had to sneak back out of the bed for some computer time (for both work and play!), but now I’m heading back to reclaim my spot next to her soft, warm little body.

Good night!
