Bloggy hugs Saturday, Sep 22 2007

I have a feeling a few of my bloggy friends are in need of some extra hugs right now. If that’s you – consider yourself hugged! XOXO

So, this project that has my brother staying with us? It’s exciting stuff. Exciting like…say, chemical weapons.

Hubby and Tim are not allowed to wear their steel-toe boots into the house, and it’s not for fear of dirt being tracked across my freshly vacuumed carpets (cuz they usually aren’t so freshly vacuumed, and even if they are vacuumed they’re still stained). It’s because I don’t like the idea of hazardous materials residue being ground into those not-so-clean carpets.

The military base where they’re working agrees with me about the “no hazardous materials” policy. That’s what this project is all about. This location was previously used for creating chemical weapons, and it’s now heavily contaminated with stuff like benzine, lead, striknine, and anthrax. Not so cool. So this project is all about soil remediation – clearing out the contaminated soil and brining in fresh fill.

As land surveyors, they’re responsible for saying where to excavate, where to fill, and checking that it was done correctly. While they need to be available all the time, it’s really a pretty cushy job and they’re actually working only a few hours a day…and the rest of the day is filled with….well, I’m not sure what all they do and I’m not sure I want to know.

I’m not crazy about my husband and brother being around those chemicals (yes, they have protection), but honestly I’m less concerned about them being hurt by that than by their own stupidity. They told me a few days ago that they spent the afternoon doing Chinese firedrills with the truck still moving! They’d both jump out of the truck, race around the front and jump back in…all with the truck still in gear. They wanted to see how fast they could successfully do this, and so far they’ve gotten to 9 MPH. And what, I asked, happens when they realize they CAN’T go fast enough? Well, they hadn’t thought about that. Yeah, they aren’t always the brightest!

So I must say I was relieved when they brought the boxed set of Futurama dvds the next day. Of course I had to give them a hard time about how they’re working SO HARD, but hey…if watching Futurama on the portable dvd player pays the bills, go for it!

But boys, just please don’t kill yourselves in the process…either from hazardous materials exposure or your own stupidity. Is it a deal?
