Saturday afternoon I was resting on the bed and reveling in the beauty of the scene before me.

Watch the world go by

Nadia stood gazing out the bedroom window, bathed in sunlight. The light kissed her sweet cheeks and turned her curls into a radiant golden halo. Her faithful friend TedBear sat on the windowsill beside her, and together they had entered that glorious childhood world of imagination and wonder…that world we too once knew, before we became distracted by responsibilities and to-do lists.

She was oblivious of me as an audience, and for a while I just sat and watched as she gazed out the window, exchanged quiet words with TedBear, and shared a drink with him. It was one of those perfect moments that I would love to be able to freeze for all eternity, and so after a few moments I reached for the camera and did my best to capture it so I can enjoy it for all eternity.

Watch the world go by

The resulting images are rather different than my usual style – sharper, more shadowy, more dramatic. The light is overly harsh and they are far from technical masterpieces. Yet I love them. I adore them. They tug at my heartstrings and I think 20 years from now, they will remain some of my favorite pictures of my girl. They capture her innocence and wonder. I even love that the sippy cup stands there and distracts from the artistry of the scene, because this is NADIA and one the quirks that I love oh-so-much about her is how she drags those beloved cups everywhere with her.

A girl and her bear

Oh my darling girl!
I pray you never lose your sweet innocence and simple joy.
I pray you never lose the path to that glorious world of imagination and wonder.

P.S. I forgot to share the best part of the story!

For a few minutes Nadia was lost in her own little world, but then she became aware of me again. She reached out her little hand and beckoned me, “Mama come…look.” And so we stood side by side, watching the world beyond our window, bathed in sunlight, her sweet warm baby hand tucked into mine.
