I know the rules are that people beget people, but sometimes I wonder if that truism got fudged a little in the making-of-Nadia and some monkey DNA got mixed in. Cuz seriously, people, with the way she climbs I could swear she’s part monkey.

So ever since I scheduled a MOMs Club playdate at The Little Gym a few weeks ago, I’ve been looking very forward to it. What a perfect place for Monkey Girl to run and jump and climb! No admonishing “no, we don’t dance on the kitchen table.”

The Little Gym
Well, yesterday was the big day. And Nadia pulled one of her little stunts and surprised me by coming not as Monkey Girl but as Shy Girl.

Maybe I should have expected it. She used to be incredibly outgoing and vivacious, thriving on new situations and living in a world with no strangers. But over the last couple months she’s become a bit more hesitant and cautious (which is probably a good thing!).

Curious but shy

So when we got to the gym, she didn’t take off running as I had expected….she hung back by Mommy, hugging my leg and watching the other kids with big eyes. After a few minutes of encouragement she did warm up and enjoy tumbling some, but she was still unusually timid and didn’t want to fully participate in the group activities. Here we were in a brightly colored gym full of mats and balance beams and parallel bars, and all Nadia wants to do is sit next to Baby (poor Baby…every time we see her, Nadia smothers her with affection!). She enjoyed herself, but it wasn’t the wild-n-crazy active time I had envisioned.

She did get some gymnastics in, though.

And Mommy got some camera time in, taking advantage of that spectacular light.
