So long, farewell to the water park Saturday, Sep 1 2007

Yesterday was our last trip of the season to the water park. It wasn’t really planned that way…I had thought the water turned off the first day of school, so we headed to the park planning to slide and swing and run and jump NOT in the water. But it turns out I was wrong (I know, ME, wrong!) and the water stays on through Labor Day. Of course that cool, refreshing water was just too enticing to a certain little girl, so I let her strip off her shirt and play in nothing but shorts and a bare belly. Ah, the carefree days of childhood!

Nadia’s been wary of water in her face for months now, and ever since our first visit to the water park this summer I’ve hoped that the sprinklers and fountains of water would help her to get over that fear. And I think it has. Yesterday she ran right into the water without a backwards glance, laughing as the water poured over her. Mission accomplished! (except she still freaks about water in her face in the bath or shower…)

I got some adorable pictures of her splashing about and relaxing on the bench, but due to my new policy I can’t share my favorites here, as she was naked from the waist up. :o ( Those of you that are f&f on Flickr can see them there, though. (let me know if you want to be added as f&f, and I’ll carefully consider the request. A care package of homemade goodies might help your case)

But here are a couple that do pass the new guidelines.

Quote of the Day Saturday, Sep 1 2007

Nadia seems to have an uncanny ability to make a huge mess out of absolutely anything. This morning’s scrambled eggs covered her head to toe, especially in her hair.

So I told her “girl, you’re a mess!”

And she corrected me “no, mama, I Nana!”

hey, at least she knows her name!

On a side note, my throat is parched and dry tonight from singing “The Wheels on the Bus” so. many. times. over the last few days. I used to eagerly await the day she would develop an interest in those fun little action songs. Well, that day has arrived, and she wants that song to be the constant soundtrack to her life now. She only likes two verses, though – “the wheels on the bus go round & round” and “the horn on the bus goes beep-beep-beep.” I am already sick of the song myself, but how can I say no to such an eanest little request and such total enthusiasm! It sure is cute to watch her awkwardly do the movements and hear her toddler voice singing along.

Photo Tips – Sleepings Babes Saturday, Sep 1 2007

Mommy's Bed
Every time I post pictures of my sleeping beauty, I get questions about how I’m able to capture these shots without waking her. Well, first of all, Nadia is a pretty heavy sleeper – once she’s out, she’s OUT! I can even vacuum the house while she’s napping, and she’ll sleep through it. So that definitely helps.

But, I do have a few tricks for taking pictures of sleeping babies. Number one rule – NO FLASH! Not only is this likely to result in an abruptly awake baby, but it also ruins the soft mood of the pictures. I turn my camera to shutter priority and select a relatively long shutter speed – usually 0.7 seconds. Then I turn on the 2 second delay, brace my arms against the rails of the crib to help steady the camera…and click!

I love to photograph my girl sleeping, and I have taken many such images. For one, I’ve found that sleeping pictures are some of the easiest ones to get without flash indoors – as she is actually still! Plus, I just can’t resist how perfectly angelic she looks in sweet slumber.
